CROWD: Albert's Favourites Takeover with The Expansions, Modified Man and Hector Plimmer (DJ set)

  • 12 St George's Walk Croydon, England, CR0 1YG United Kingdom (map)

FREE ENTRY. CROWD is back with our last pop-up event of the summer in the heart of Croydon town featuring live music, DJ sets, bars and street food.

This time we’re handing over the musical reins to Croydon record label Albert’s Favourites to bring in the freshest inner city, jazz and funking vibes and a dose of London electronica for a summer good times party featuring The Expansions, Modified Man and Hector Plimmer (DJ set) – all showing just why this independent label has been featured so heavily on BBC Radio 6 Music by Huey Morgan, Gilles Peterson and Lauren Laverne.

From the gritty suburbs of South London comes a fresh take on a classic sound. THE EXPANSIONS craft slick jazz with a funk groove into towering landscapes that reflect the sounds of the city they live in. Drawing influence from the masters of the 1970’s street sounds – Roy Ayers, Dennis Coffey, George Duke and Herbie Hancock – and fusing this with a love of artists such as The Stepkids, Lettuce and Quantic, this four piece will transport you back to the grimy sidewalks of uptown Manhattan, complete with Cadillac and a fur coat.

Made up of Adam Scrimshire and Dave Koor, MODIFIED MAN are a South London based duo intent on creating deeply soulful music that would be as at home in the seventies as it would be right now. Modern production techniques and vintage instruments are combined into seamless tracks, as machines are played live in single takes, avoiding loops wherever creatively possible. Homage is paid to their favourite composers and producers, and the music is full of vibe and atmosphere.

Born and raised in South London, HECTOR PLIMMER is a designer, producer and DJ, who has been making some considerable waves over the past year. Following up an appearance on the most recent Gilles Peterson Brownswood Bubblers compilation, Hector proved his talent when he was selected as the winner of the PRS Steve Reid InNOVAtion Award.

This isn’t just our last party of the summer, but also our last ever event at St George’s Walk as this cult corner of Croydon 70s architecture is set for redevelopment. Come join the CROWD.
